After 37 years of sharing stories and shaping minds at PHS, English teacher Beth McCormick is closing the final chapter of her teaching career at Portland. Known for her love for everything literary and her ability to challenge and connect with students, McCormick has been a key part in making Portland High School special.

She’s taught AP English, American Studies, Creative Writing, and Public Speaking. She has helped hundreds of students embrace imagination, step outside of their comfort zone, and find a love for the English language.

When I spoke to one of her students, Annabelle Maruschock said, “I’ve taken American Studies and AP Lit with Ms. McCormick and she’s helped me unlock skills that I didn’t even know I had yet. I feel way more prepared for college thanks to her amazing teaching.”

McCormick’s impact has extended far beyond the classroom. Over the years, she’s served as a team leader, member of several interview and award committees, class advisor, and mentor to new teachers–just to name a few.

Even with a busy schedule, McCormick dedicates a lot of her free time to support PHS students beyond academics. She attended and volunteered at sporting events, concerts, and musicals.

Words can not express how appreciative the PHS students and staff are of Ms. McCormick. She’s had an outstanding impact on our community that will last a lifetime. When asked about her plans for the future, she responded, “Having devoted my life to teaching, to raising people, to helping a lot of people in my own family and caring for others. For a few years at least… I think I want to devote some time to myself.” While she will be missed, we celebrate the legacy she is leaving behind and wish her the best in her new chapter.
