Dylan Bernard is a technology teacher in Portland High School’s CTE department. Despite being a technology teacher, Bernard never took technology classes in high school. He always had an interest in building and designing things from a young age. After high school, he attended Central Connecticut State University as an undeclared engineering major. Through Central’s undeclared program, he explored various classes to determine which engineering field he wanted to pursue. Bernard said, “I couldn’t see myself after taking engineering and manufacturing courses, doing that for the rest of my life. I found that I was overqualified for tech education, ever since then I never looked back.” He is currently in his eighth year of teaching at Portland High School, where this was his first ever official teaching position. He is currently furthering his education by working on his master’s degree in “Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in science.”
Bernard extends his involvement far beyond the classroom. He is deeply engaged in the school through numerous roles, including teacher, yearbook advisor, tech director for the musical, advisor for the Portland National Honor Society, class advisor, and a senior faculty member of the Portland Safe Schools coalition. He also assists the board of education with technology. Bernard has no specific favorite role at the school. He mentioned that his favorite aspect of these roles is “getting the chance to work with all the people involved.” Despite all of the hard work it takes to do these roles, he perseveres. Portland High school is lucky to have a devoted teacher such as Bernard.
