Not much is known about Portland High School’s new English teacher, Evan Ortiz. Following the departure of the previous English teacher, Kaylee Smith, Ortiz took over her classes previously teaching in New Haven County. Ortiz received his education at La Salle University, where he double majored in History and English Literature. Afterward, Ortiz went to the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut for his Master's in English education.

Ortiz brings to Portland a new perspective on teaching and learning in the classroom. When asked what he believes to be most important about his teaching style, Ortiz said, “It's important to me to build value in the material that we cover, build its relevance, and create a desire to learn.” Ortiz believes that teaching the “why” of the learning process is vital in the process of understanding: “Understanding of the value and of what we cover makes it more accessible.”

For Ortiz, English and history have always been important. He believes that the skills learned in an English class will follow you not just in high school but in your future education and beyond.  “I think that a lot of the subject matter is something to be passionate about, and also a lot of the different types of writing that you get into in high school, things like eventually needing to be able to write cover letters, college essays… I just know it is so important.”

With a passion for teaching and a drive to get his students interested and engaged, Ortiz will prove a valuable asset to Portland High School, now and in the future.
